A special day to honor
region's young farmers
BY JOHN LEIDNER
A BARBEQUE PORK-COOKING contest, horsehoe pitching tournament, and a big dinner with entertainment and valuable door prizes,
are among the activities in store Wednesday, Oct. 18, as Sunbelt Ag
Expo honors young farmers and their families.
Expo started hosting special activities for young farmers in 1988,
and the events planned for this year carry on that long tradition.
Some 25 teams are expected to compete in the annual 'Que Fest
barbeque cookoff. Barbeque pits will be fired up early in the morning Oct. 18, with grilling to take place throughout the morning at the
traditional location between the Expo farm shop and the equipment
staging area. This area is located to the rear of blocks WC- 10 and WC-
11 in the northwestern section of the exhibit grounds.
Young Farmer chapters taking part in the 'Que Fest will be cooking
5 lb. and 6 lb. boneless pork Boston butts. Judging will get under way
at 1 p.m., with barbecue being rated on appearance, flavor, tenderness,
and overall impression. Judges will again include airmen from Moody
Air Force Base, plus the overall winner of this year’s Swisher Sweets/
Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award.
During last year’s Expo, the top prize of $1,200 for the 'Que Fest
went to the young farmer cooking team from Bacon County, Ga.
The Terrell Weeks Spirit of 'Que Fest award was presented to the
young farmer chapter from Tift County, Ga., the second year in a
row for them to win the award, which is presented to the chapter with the best cooking site decorations. It is named for the late

their families. It starts at 5: 30 p.m in the Maule Aircraft Facility, and
will feature topnotch entertainment and valuable door prizes. Hundreds of Young Farmer members and their families are expected to
attend the dinner, which will feature meat cooked during the 'Que
Fest competition. The evening will be highlighted by the announcement of this year’s winners of the 'Que Fest and horseshoe pitching

with only the most talented being selected.
